His Story

From humble beginnings to a lasting legacy.

Ignatius Seveirano Ferreira was born in Belmont on September 24, 1928, and grew up in Chaguanas. His early years shaped the determination, discipline and work ethic that would become hallmarks of his remarkable life.

In 1946, at the age of 18, he joined Furness, Withy & Co. as an office boy. What began as an ordinary first job became the beginning of an extraordinary association with the Furness organisation that would span decades.

He moved through numerous departments and responsibilities, gaining experience in accountancy, the ice factory, hardware and lumber, shipping, claims management and engineering. Each position added another layer to the knowledge and experience that would eventually prepare him for leadership.

His journey was characterised by movement, learning and responsibility — from clerk to manager, from salesman to managing director, and ultimately to the leadership of Furness Trinidad Limited.

The Man Behind The Legacy

More than a businessman

His story was not defined only by corporate achievement, but by family, faith, service, discipline and an enduring commitment to doing things well.

Hard Work & Dedication

Ignatius Ferreira attributed his achievements to two fundamental principles: hard work and dedication. His career reflected that philosophy — beginning at the most junior level and developing through practical experience across the organisation.

A Life of Service

Beyond business, he dedicated time to service through organisations and community activities, including St. John Ambulance. His involvement reflected a belief that leadership carries responsibilities beyond the boardroom.

Family

In 1956, Ignatius and Elia Ferreira married and built a family together. They raised five children, four boys and one girl, creating a family legacy that became closely connected with the history of Furness.

Faith

Faith was an important part of his life. His early years included service as an acolyte in the Chaguanas Roman Catholic Church, and later in life he was recognised with a knighthood in the Order of St. Sylvester by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
